Collaborations with Colleges

Hiralal Majumdar Memorial College for Women, Dakshineswar

An ongoing interdisciplinary project on a completely non-toxic approach to Mosquito Larva Control using solar power is nearing completion. The project entails developing a surface turbulence device running on solar electricity which produces surface waves on water surfaces which prevent larvae from using their siphons to breathe. Thus, deprived of oxygen, larvae asphyxiate and die after a certain duration of exposure to the surface turbulator. Laboratory studies have been completed and a research paper containing the essential results has been communicated. The project has involved collaboration of Surjokarmaa members Sekhar Banerjee and Parthasarathi Majumdar, together with Indrajit Biswas and Anindya Bhunian, zoology faculty at the College, together with Physics faculty member Parthapratim Pradhan.

Prabhat Kumar College, Kanthi

A training-cum-research project on solar energy utilization is to be undertaken with the Physics Department of Prabhat Kumar College, Kanthi starting in July 2019. The first part of the project will entail basic hands on training of students on various aspects of low voltage, offgrid, standalone solar electricity generation. The purpose of the project is to use the trained personnel to set up standalone light and fan systems for the hostel canteen. The second part of the project is to consist of several options : solar water purifier, non-toxic ecofriendly solar mosquito repellant, non-toxic ecofriendly snake repellant, low-cost lightning detector alarm system. Students may choose one of these projects and work on it for 4-6 weeks, including basic fabrication, laboratory trials and field trials, leading to eventual marketability of the products.
